Walnut Bottom Woodworks

A five-page Grow site with an illustrated portfolio, a long services page and a compact quote form, built from the template in the same way a client site is.

Walnut Bottom Woodworks is a demonstration build for a fictional business, not a paid client project. I made it up to show what a Grow package site looks like. The people, phone number, portfolio and prices on it are invented, and every page says so in its footer.

The challenge

Walnut Bottom is a custom furniture and cabinetry shop of nine people in Columbus, Indiana: the owner, a shop foreman, three cabinetmakers, a finisher, an installer and two apprentices. Work like that sells on the pieces themselves, so the site has to show the work first, explain each kind of job well enough that a customer arrives with the easy questions already answered, and make asking for a quote quick.

What I built

A Grow package site with five pages: Home, Portfolio, Services, About and Contact. The home page opens on six framed pieces hung together like pictures on a wall, then the people in the shop, drawn standing in the barn door. Portfolio shows nine pieces, each with the wood, the finish and who in the shop made it. Services is one long page with a section for each line of work (kitchens and baths, built-ins, restoration and repair, and custom furniture), each with an example starting price and its common questions answered in the text. Contact puts a compact quote form beside a block about visiting the showroom.

The portfolio pieces are drawings rather than photographs, since there is no real shop to photograph. The logo, colours and fonts are its own. Underneath, it is a copy of the same template as this site and the Launch demo.

The result

The site is live and the quote form works. It posts to the same backend as the contact form on this site, so a request lands in my inbox tagged as coming from the demo rather than from a real prospect. On a client’s Grow site that form would also text the owner; the demo sends no text.

Pages from the site

  • Walnut Bottom Woodworks home page with the headline Cabinetry and furniture, drawn for the room, beside a framed drawing of a walnut trestle table captioned with its wood, finish and makers.
    Home: the work comes first.
  • Portfolio page headed Work from the shop, opening on the walnut trestle table drawing with its wood, finish and who built it alongside.
Portfolio: every piece names the wood, the finish and who in the shop made it.
  • Contact page with a dark showroom visit panel on the left and a compact quote form on the right asking for name, household, phone, email and the kind of work.
Contact: the compact quote form beside the showroom details.
